Since the word is an attempt to represent in spelling what is essentially an inarticulate sound broadly imitative of an animal's growl, it is impossible to know with any certainty what sound any given writer is trying to portray. Forms with r occurring a larger number of times are usually used to represent a longer or more fierce growling sound.]
