4. U.S. slang. A vessel in which beer is fetched. to rush the growler (see quot. 1888).

5. A compact mass of floating ice, smaller than a ‘bergy bit’, but of such a size that waves do not quite break over its top; a small iceberg.

6. Electr. An electromagnet with two poles designed to receive an armature, used for testing the windings for short circuits.
If a short circuit exists in the armature coils its presence is indicated by a ‘growling’ noise.
