Gray, n.1 Telecommunications.|greɪ| The name of Frank Gray (1887–1969), U.S. physicist, used attrib., esp. in Gray code, a code in which consecutive integers are represented by binary numbers differing in only one digit, published by him in 1947 (U.S. Patent 2,632,058).
1956IRE Trans. Electronic Computers June 79/1 As the applications for computers increased the problem of analog-to-digital conversion arose. It is exceedingly difficult to solve this problem within the framework of conventional number systems. To that end, the reflected binary or Gray code was invented by F. Gray. 1963Information & Control VI. 77 The affine Gray codes constitute a small subclass of all possible Gray codes. Ibid., The ‘low order’ digits of the Gray code words can be truncated. 1970O. Dopping Computers & Data Processing ii. 40 When a computer is to do arithmetic on numbers which are expressed in Gray code, the usual procedure is first to let the computer translate the Gray number to ordinary binary form. 1987Electronics & Wireless World Jan. 42/3 Gray codes..were first developed for use on shaft encoders, or for work with rotating parts where the angle of rotation had to be controlled accurately. |
