[f. L. grānul-um granule, after the analogy of glaucoma and other words of Gr. origin.]
‘A term invented by Virchow to include certain neoplasms which generally do not advance in structure beyond the stage of granulation tissue, and which usually proceed to ulceration’ (Syd. Soc. Lex. 1886). Also with qualifying L. adj., as granuloma inguinale, a chronic, probably venereal infection produced by the bacterium Calymmatobacterium (Donovania) granulomatis and characterized by creeping granulomatous lesions in the inguinal and genital regions.
