[Probably originally ‹ the name of Gomer Pyle, U.S. television character portrayed as an ignorant rustic (introduced in The Andy Griffith Show (first broadcast in 1960 on CBS), later featured in Gomer Pyle, USMC (first broadcast in 1964 on CBS); for a fuller discussion, see Amer. Speech (1989) 64 153–6. In sense 2 often explained as an acronym ‹ the initial letters of get out of my emergency room, but this is likely to be a later rationalization.]
