[Fr., older spelling of reconnaissance. In sense 1 by substitution for recognizance.
This form, in the military sense, though less usual than reconnaissance, appears earlier than it in Dictionaries, being given by Webster in 1847 with a reference to the Penny Cycl. (1841, article on reconnoissance in vol. XIX. 329).]
