1704Harris Lex. Techn., Gift-rope is the Boat-Rope, which is fastened to the Boat when she is swifted, in order to her being towed at the Stern of a Ship. 1753Chambers Cycl. Supp., Chest-rope, in a ship, is the same with the guest or gift-rope. 1867Smyth Sailor's Word-bk., Gift-rope (synonymous with guest-rope), a rope for boats at the guest-warp boom.
