1877Huxley Anat. Inv. Anim. i. 50 In the Porifera the terminal aperture of the gastræa becomes the egestive opening of the adult animal. 2. A primitive sac-like animal, whose existence is assumed by Haeckel, consisting of two layers of cells, an ectoderm and an endoderm. gastræa theory, the theory which supposes this to have been the ancestral form of the whole animal kingdom.
