garcinia Bot.|gɑːˈsɪnɪə| [mod.L. (Linnæus Genera Plantarum (1737) 343), f. the name of Laurent Garcin (1683–1751), French botanist and traveller, + -ia.] A member of the genus so named of tropical, evergreen trees, belonging to the family Guttiferæ and found in Asia, Africa, and Polynesia; some species produce gamboge, and another is the mangosteen.
