1. trans. To protect (a fish-hook, part of a fishing-line) with fine wire.
1861Couch Brit. Fishes I. 38 The line..was armed or as a fisherman..would say was ganged with flexible brass wire twisted regularly and firmly round it. 1880W. Cornwall Gloss. s.v., To gange a hook is to cover it with fine brass or copper wire, to prevent its being bitten off by the fish.
2. ‘To fasten (a fish-hook) to the end of a section of line called the ganging’ (Cent. Dict.).
