‖ trottoir|trɔtwar| [F. (16th c.), f. trotter to trot + -oir, L. -ōrium.] A paved footway on each side of a street; a pavement. Also attrib.
1792A. Young Trav. France I. 150 The streets..are wide, and very well paved, with the addition, uncommon in France, of trotoirs. 1804Edinb. Rev.
