Tripitaka, n. Brit. |trɪˈpɪtəkə|, |ˌtrɪpɪˈtɑːkə|, U.S. |ˌtrɪpəˈtɑkə| [Buddhist Sanskrit tripiṭaka, probably altered form (by folk etymology) of ṭippiṭaka: see etymological note at Pitaka n. and compare pitara n.] Buddhism. Usu. with the. The sacred canon of (Theravada) Buddhism, originally written in the Pali language; a book containing these texts. The canon is divided into three sections or pitakas (cf. Pitaka n.).
