‖ tri-doˈminium [In form mod.L., f. tri- + L. dominium lordship, rule, dominion.] The joint rule of three powers or states: applied to the former rule of Gt. Britain, Germany, and the United States in Samoa, and of Great Britain, Greece, and Turkey in Cyprus.
1899Westm. Gaz. 1 Mar. 2/3 Herr von Bülow..is reported to have said with regard to Samoa that the Tri-dominium had failed. 1900Edin. Rev. Apr. 499 The break up of the unworkable tridominium..has been satisfactory to all parties. 1955Times 25 July 7/7 The second scheme is, broadly, that the island should be turned into some form of ‘tri⁓dominium’ with, perhaps, a British Governor and one Greek and one Turkish deputy Governor, and with all three national flags flying over Government House. 1958Times 20 June 11/2 The next stage may be independence, condominium, or even the perpetuation of tridominium, but it can scarcely be absorption by either Greece or Turkey. |
