[a. F. framboise (from 12th c.), usually regarded as a corruption of Du. braambezie = Ger. brombeere blackberry, lit. bramble-berry: see bramble, broom, berry. But some French scholars doubt this.]

[1551–62Turner cites the word as French only.] 1578Lyte Dodoens vi. v. 662 Of Framboys, Raspis, or Hyndberie.
