The name of Richard (‘Dick’) Fosbury (b. 1947), U.S. athlete and 1968 Olympic gold-medallist, used attrib., esp. as Fosbury flop, to designate a method of high jumping popularized by him, in which the athlete leaps head-first and facing outwards, attempting to clear the bar under his (or her) back; hence Fosbury-flop vb. intr.
