formaldehyde Chem.|fɔːˈmældɪhaɪd| [f. form- + aldehyde.] A choking gas, CH2O, usually prepared as an aqueous solution, and used as a preservative, an antiseptic, and in large quantities as a raw material in the chemical and plastics industries.
