toxarch Anc. Gr. Hist.|ˈtɒksɑːk| [ad. Gr. τόξαρχος ‘lord of the bow’, captain of the archers, f. τόξον bow + -αρχος ruler.] The title of the captain of the city-guard of mercenaries at Athens.
1828[G. C. Lewis] tr. Böckh's Publ. Econ. Athens I. 278 The public slaves who composed the city-guard..are generally called bow-men (τοξόται), or, from the native country of the majority, Scythians... Their officers had the name of Toxarchs (τόξαρχοι). |
