[f. Arab. fals, (colloq.) fils, small coin, pl. fulūs money, ult. f. Gr. ϕόλλις the designation of the Byzantine copper coin. Cf. fluce n.]
Formerly, the local name for any of a number of small copper coins of varying value used throughout the Middle East, the Byzantine Empire, and parts of India; in modern use, a monetary unit of Iraq, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Southern Yemen, equal in value to one thousandth of a dinar, the U.A.E. (one hundredth of a dirham) and the Yemen Arab Republic (one hundredth of a riyal).
