filovirus, n. Virol. Brit. |ˈfiːlə(ʊ)ˌvʌɪrəs|, |ˈˈfʌɪlə(ʊ)ˌvʌɪrəs|, U.S. |ˈfiloʊˌvaɪrəs|, |ˈfiləˌvaɪrəs|, |ˈfaɪloʊˌvaɪrəs|, |ˈfaɪləˌvaɪrəs| [‹ classical Latin fīlum thread, filament (see file n.2) + -o- connective + virus n.] Any member of the family Filoviridae of enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses with pleomorphic filamentous particles, comprising Marburg virus and Ebola virus, which infect humans and other primates and cause severe, often fatal, haemorrhagic fever.
1982M. P. Kiley et al. in Intervirology 18 28/1 Family: Filoviridae (proposed). Genus: Filovirus. Type Species: Marburg (MBG) virus human. 1984Antiviral Res. 4 170 Yet again the agents of Marburg and Ebola (filoviruses) appear to contain only a single species of negative strand RNA. 1994Gazette (Montreal) 5 Nov. j8/1 One of the scariest scenarios for the future is that a deadly airborne virus, such as the dreaded African filovirus that causes Ebola fever..will escape from a laboratory and begin infecting the surrounding community. 2001Fortean Times Jan. 16/3 The hair-like filovirus spreads through contact with bodily fluids and so can be limited, to some extent, by simple isolation nursing procedures. |
