单词 Ferrel
释义 Ferrel, n. Meteorol.|ˈfɛrəl|
The name of William Ferrel (1817–91), U.S. meteorologist, used attrib. and in the possessive to designate concepts related to atmospheric movement described by him, as Ferrel cell, an atmospheric convection cell between 30° and 60° of latitude in each hemisphere, in which tropical air sinks, moves polewards, rises, and moves equatorwards again in each hemisphere; Ferrel's law, the law that Coriolis forces deflect winds and freely moving objects to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere.
1902Encycl. Brit. XXVIII. 620/2 Another important consequence of rotation is the deviation produced in moving bodies relatively to the surface. In the form known as Ferrell's [sic] Law this runs: ‘If a body moves in any direction on the Earth's surface, there is a deflecting force which arises from the earth's rotation which tends to deflect to the right in the northern hemisphere but to the left in the southern hemisphere.’1917Tennessee Hist. Mag. Sept. 195 The main idea expressed in this paper was later formulated into what has since become known as ‘Ferrel's Law’.1955Sci. Amer. Sept. 122/2 It is..likely that the Hadley and Ferrel cells transport some of the energy and that the ocean currents carry more energy poleward than has been estimated.1967R. W. Fairbridge Encycl. Atmospheric Sci. 383/2 The dynamic concept that winds in the northern hemisphere are deflected to the right and those in the southern hemisphere are deflected to the left is known as Ferrel's law.1970C. W. Newton in G. A. Corby Global Circulation of Atmosphere 137 The dominant circulations are the Hadley cells of each hemisphere... In extra-tropical latitudes, the existence of much weaker ‘indirect’ Ferrel cells is likewise well established.1985Jrnl. Atmospheric Sci. XLII. 1565 The isobaric mass circulation during the first GARP Global Experiment is consistent with previous results, i.e. direct Hadley cells in low latitudes and indirect Ferrel cells in midlatitudes of both hemispheres.
