A substance formerly supposed to be an iron-containing protein that occurs esp. in the liver (see quot. 1946).
1893O. Schmiedeberg in Practitioner Dec. 427, I have now..succeeded..in isolating it in an unmixed condition from pig's liver. It contains, on the average, 6 per cent. of iron, and may briefly be referred to as Ferratin.Ibid., Ferratin is the only combination of iron which is ingested with food, and which is found stored up in the tissues as a reserve-material for the formation of blood.1909Chem. Abstr. III. 2008 Schmiedeberg prepared ‘ferratin’ and called it a ‘ferrialbuminic acid’ of 6% Fe content... The compd. is not a ‘ferri⁓albuminic acid’ but is an Fe-containing nucleo-protein.1930Proc.
