In the United Kingdom: a means-tested social security benefit which is paid to low-income families with at least one child, and in which at least one parent works 16 or more hours a week; (later, informally) the Working Families' Tax Credit.
Family Credit was introduced in 1988 to replace the Family Income Supplement and was replaced in 1999 by the Working Families' Tax Credit.
