The reporting as a memory of an event that did not occur; (now) spec. the apparent recollection, esp. during psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, of childhood sexual abuse (esp. in false memory syndrome). Most examples of false memory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, then considered to be a form of paramnesia, would now be regarded as delusion or confabulation.
