In full Grand Prix de Rome. One of a group of prizes awarded annually by the French Government, established by Louis XIV in 1666 for competition by young painters and sculptors, extended in 1720 to include architects, and in 1803 to include musicians and engravers. The winner of the first prize in each category is entitled to a period of study in Rome; also, the winner of a prix de Rome.
