In the OE. quots. the words have their ordinary sense, so that the phrase = ‘any longer’, ‘ever again’ (cf. evermore 3 c); but prob. má was also used to emphasize ǽfre in the sense ‘to all future time’; cf. Ger. immer always (:—OHG. io-mêr), immermehr evermore, Fr. jamais ever, never (:—vulgar Lat. jam magis ‘now more’).]
