reafference|riːˈæfərəns| [ad. G. reafferenz (von Holst and Mittelstaedt 1950, in Naturwissenschaften XXXVII. 464). Cf. afferent a.] Sensory stimulation in which the stimulus changes as a result of the individual's movements in response to it.
1965Sci. Amer. Nov. 85/1 A key to its operation is the availability of ‘reafference’. This word was coined by the German physiologists Erich von Holst and Horst Mittelstädt to describe neural excitation following sensory stimulation that is systematically dependent on movements initiated by the sensing animal. 1971J. S. Bruner Beyond Information Given (1974) xiv. 249 The crucial issue in the regulation of intentional action is the opportunity to compare what was intended with what in fact resulted, using the difference between the two as a basis of correction. It is immediately apparent that this is the concept of reafference as a source of regulation in behavior. 1973R. Martin tr. von Holst's Behav. Physiol. of Anim. & Men I. iii. 141 Rather than asking about the relationship between a given afference and the evoked efference (i.e. about the reflex), we set out in the opposite direction..asking: What happens in the CNS with the afference (referred to as the ‘reafference’) which is evoked through the effectors and receptors by the efference? 1973C. D. Kernig Marxism, Communism & Western Soc. VII. 103/2 As early as 1935 Anokhin..had discovered a phenomenon corresponding to the reafference principle. 1979S. Coren et al. Sensation & Perception xvi. 391/1 It has been suggested that reafference is necessary for the development of accurate visually guided spatial behavior. |
