escadrille, n. Now only Hist. (ɛskəˈdrɪl, ‖ ɛskadrij) [Fr., ‘flotilla, flight’, ad. Sp. escuadrilla, dim. of escuadra squadron.] The basic operational unit of the French air force; a French air squadron, esp. in the war of 1914–18. Cf. flight n.1 1 h.
