erythræmia Path.|ɛrɪˈθriːmɪə| Also erythremia. [mod.L., ad. G. erythrämie (W. Türk 1904, in Wiener klin. Wochenschr. 18 Feb. 192/1), f. Gr. ἐρυθρός red + αἷµα blood.] An excess of red cells in the blood; any disease so characterized, esp. polycythæmia vera.
[1860Mayne Expos. Lex. Add. 1493/1 Erythræmia, term for the full preparing of arterial blood in the lungs.] 1908W. Osler in Lancet 18 Jan. 145/1 For the recognition of the disease a blood count is necessary, not simply a blood examination, as in cases of leukæmia. The essential feature, the polycythæmia, the erythræmia, can be determined only by counting the number of red blood corpuscles in a cubic millimetre. 1968Passmore & Robson Compan. Med. Stud. I. xxvi. 3 The red cell mass is naturally low in anaemia; when it is raised the patient is said to have erythraemia. Hence eryˈthræmic a., characterized by or characteristic of erythræmia.
1938Harrop & Wintrobe in H. Downey Handbk. Hematol. IV. xxxiv. 2378 Many members of such families may possess the ‘erythremic constitution’. 1962Lancet 1 Dec. 1140/2 Acute erythræmic myelosis, or acute immature-cell erythræmia, has become well known since its original description by Di Guglielmo (1928). |
