1910E. A. Birge in Trans. Wisc. Acad. Sci., Arts & Lett. XVI. ii. 1005, I employ two new words in this paper... These terms are epilimnion, for the upper warm layer of water..and hypolimnion, for the lower colder water. 1936Nature 5 Dec. 971/1 The result of this warming is that, in summer, a warm upper layer of less dense water, the epilimnion, comes to lie over a cold deeper water mass, the hypolimnion. 1940Ibid. 24 Aug. 255/1 The epilimnial current..opposes the hypolimnial current, causing turbulence at the thermocline. 1957G. E. Hutchinson Treat. Limnol. I. vii. 447 In the former case, the 15-m. depth was evidently ordinarily epilimnetic, in the latter case metalimnetic. 1959J. Clegg Freshwater Life (ed. 2) ii. 38 The epilimnion..is well lighted, warm and well oxygenated, and..a wealth of minute plants is able to thrive. 1959Times 20 June 9/3 They [sc. tench] have been termed ‘epilimnion feeders’. |
