endomixis Biol.|ɛndəʊˈmɪksɪs| [f. endo- + Gr. µῖξις mixing, (sexual) intercourse.] A process that occurs in some lower ciliates, in which the old macronucleus disintegrates and a new one is formed from micronuclear material without conjugation taking place.
1914Woodruff & Erdmann in Jrnl. Exper. Zool. XVII. 491 This [rearrangement] involves a more profound intermingling of nuclear and cytoplasmic substances than is possible during the typical vegetative life of the cell. Since this intermingling occurs within a cell we term this reorganization process endomixis. 1936Jrnl. Morphology LIX. 13 The term ‘endomixis’ has been applied to a variety of nuclear reorganization processes which may not have very much in common. 1961Mackinnon & Hawes Introd. Study Protozoa 292 Many of the books continue to give detailed accounts of endomixis, which almost certainly does not occur in Paramecium... Endomixis does occur in some of the lower ciliates. 1965V. A. Dogiel Gen. Protozool. (ed. 2) vii. 383 In its simplest form endomixis is accomplished in Epistylus articulata. |
