In Muslim law: (a method of) divorce by the husband's mere verbal repudiation of his wife in a set form of words (see quots.). Cf. get n.3
1791C. Hamilton tr. Hedàya I. iv. 200 Talâk, in its primitive sense, means dismission:—in law it signifies the dissolution of a marriage, or the annulment of its legality, by certain words. 1861in E. F. Moore Rep. Cases Appeal from E. Indies VIII. 395 A divorce by Talâk is the mere arbitrary act of the husband, who may repudiate his wife at his own pleasure, with or without cause. 1917Law Rep.
