adelphogamy Zool.|ædɛlˈfɒgəmɪ| [f. Gr. ἀδελϕός brother + γάµος marriage, after monogamy.] The mating of brothers and sisters, as in certain ants.
1926W. M. Wheeler tr. R.A.F. de Réaumur's Nat. Hist. Ants 244 ‘Adelphogamy’, or mating between males and virgin females of the same formicary undoubtedly occurs. 1928C. K. Ogden tr. Forel's Soc. World of Ants. I iii. ii. 406 Marriage takes place..between newly-matured brothers and sisters sprung from the same mother... Hence this is a clear and evident case of perpetual and constant adelphogamy. |
