[app. = OHG. erlinc, ‘escaurus’, prob. cognate and synonymous with mod.Ger. elritze minnow, which Kluge connects with eller (OHG. elira, erila), alder, as if ‘fish that lives under the shade of alders’.] A fish; perh. properly the minnow (Leuciscus phoxinus), though this does not suit quot. 1618.
