elastane, n. Brit. |ɪˈlasteɪn|, U.S. |əˈlæsteɪn|, |iˈlæsteɪn| [‹ elast- (in elastic adj.) + -ane suffix.] A highly elastic polyurethane material, composed of any of various man-made elastomeric fibres, which is used in the clothing industry, esp. for hosiery, underwear, and other close-fitting garments. Elastane is the generic name for the man-made elastic fibres known in the United States and Canada by the generic name Spandex n. A proprietary name for a variety of this fabric is Lycra n.
