sylvestrene Chem.|sɪlˈvɛstriːn| [ad. G. sylvestren (A. Atterberg 1877, in Ber. Deut. Chem. Ges. X. 1203), f. L. sylvestr-is found in woods (f. silva: see sylva, silva), specific epithet of the Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris: see -ene.] A liquid monocyclic terpene, C10H16, known in two optically active forms and formerly believed to be a natural constituent of pine oil, but now recognized as a product of the extraction process.
1877Chem. News 6 July 7/1 A. Atterberg has examined the crude ‘Wood-Spirit from Norwegian Pines’, and found in the higher boiling portions..a new turpentine, to which he assigns the name sylvestrine. 1931[see isoprene b]. 1952Turner & Harris Org. Chem. xix. 317 Simonsen..showed that the precursor of sylvestrene is the naturally occurring (+)- Δ3-carene. |
