[The name of Martin Heinrich Rathke (1793–1860), German anatomist, who described the structure in 1838 (Arch. für Anat., Physiol. und Wissenschaftl. Med. 482).]
Rathke's pouch or Rathke's pocket (also pouch of Rathke): a diverticulum of the oral cavity, which in developing vertebrates forms the anterior lobe of the pituitary body.
1889A. Macalister Textbk. Human Anat. 620 The stomodæum joined the oral end of the mesenteron at about the fourteenth day and from its upper part is projected the hypophysial pouch of Rathke. 1892E.
