[Bengalī, lit. = own-country things, i.e. home industries.]
Used chiefly attrib. to designate an Indian nationalist movement originating in Bengal, which advocated principally the support of indigenous industries using home-produced materials (esp. cotton), and the boycott of foreign goods. Now (since the partition of 1947) Hist. Hence Swadeshism.
