actinophage Biochem.|ækˈtɪnəʊfeɪdʒ| [f. actinomycetes + phage.] A virus that attacks actinomycetes.
1947H. C. Reilly et al. in Jrnl. Bacteriol. LIV. 451 The term ‘bacteriophage’ is usually applied to the virus or phage of bacteria, and the term ‘mycophage’ to that of fungi. By analogy, the term ‘actinophage’ may be used to designate the phage of actinomycetes. 1951Bacteriol. Proc. 48 An actinophage has been isolated from cultures and fermenter mashes of S. aureofaciens. 1961Nature 18 Feb. 603/2 The possible utility of actinophage susceptibility as a criterion for species differentiation in the genus Streptomyces has been the subject of much discussion. |
