trans. To dye twice; fig. to imbue or stain deeply.

Hence double-dyed ppl. a., dyed twice; fig. deeply imbued or stained (with guilt, etc.); double-dyeing n., a method of dyeing mixed woollen and cotton fabrics by which the two are dyed separately.
