dosha, n. Brit. |ˈdɒʃə|, |ˈdəʊʃə|, U.S. |ˈdɑʃə|, |ˈdoʊʃə| [‹ Sanskrit doṣa, lit. ‘fault, disease’ (especially of the three humours of the body), used by extension to refer to the three humours themselves (known collectively in Sanskrit as tridoṣa, lit. ‘the three malignancies’).] In Ayurvedic medicine: each of the three humours circulating in the body and governing physiological activity, their differing proportions determining individual temperament, physical constitution and (when imbalanced) giving rise to a disposition to particular physical and mental disorders. The three doshas (kapha n., pitta n.3, and vata n.) are in turn regarded as composed of different pairings of the five elements from which all matter is composed (ether, earth, air, fire, and water).
