1. trans. To bring (a person) into some position in addition to, or so as to displace, one who already occupies it.
a. To take (a second wife) within the lifetime of the first (or, by extension, shortly after her death); also, to bring (the child of another wife) into the inheritance in preference to the former heir. Obs. or arch.
