Dogme, n. Film. Brit. |ˈdɒgmə|, U.S. |ˈdɔgmə|, |ˈdɑgmə| Forms: 19– Dogma, 19– Dogme [‹ Danish dogme (1995 in Dogme 95: see below), spec. use of dogme dogma n.] A set of guidelines intended to produce simpler, more naturalistic films, unembellished by elaborate cinematography or contrived plots. Also: the group of film-makers following such guidelines, or this approach, considered as a school or movement. Also more fully Dogme 95. Freq. attrib. The guidelines, consisting of ten rules called The Vow of Chastity, were originally formulated on 13 March 1995 in Copenhagen, Denmark, by a group of Danish film directors comprising Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, Kristian Levring, Thomas Vinterberg, and Lars von Trier.
