Dissentient Liberals, (in Politics) a term applied (by opponents) to those members of the Liberal party who in 1886 dissented from the action of the majority in adopting the principle of ‘Home Rule’ for Ireland as part of the political programme; called by themselves Liberal Unionists. Hence diˈssentientism.
