[a. late L. succentor, agent-n. f. succinĕre to sing to, accompany, ‘chime in’, agree, f. suc- = sub- 8 + canĕre to sing. In sense 3, as correlative to præcentor precentor, associated with sub- 6 (cf. subchanter).]
