diphanite Min.|ˈdɪfənaɪt| [f. (1846) Gr. δι-, δίς twice, doubly + -ϕαν-ης showing, appearing + -ite: ‘because it has quite a different aspect according to the direction in which it is looked at’.] A name given by Nordenskiöld to a mineral now regarded as belonging to the species margarite. Viewed from the side, its prisms are bluish, transparent, and of vitreous lustre; looking down on the base, they are white, opaque, and of nacreous lustre.
