Student2 Statistics.|ˈstjuːdənt| The pseudonym of William Sealy Gossett (1876–1937), English brewery employee, used attrib. and in the possessive to designate statistical concepts devised by him, as Student('s) (t-)distribution, a statistical distribution which is that of a fraction whose numerator is drawn from a normal distribution with a mean of zero and whose denominator is the root mean square of k terms drawn from the same normal distribution (where k is the number of degrees of freedom); Student's (t) test, a test for statistical significance that uses tables of this distribution.
1929Nature 17 Aug. 267/1 This is not to say that the deviation from ‘Student's’ t-distribution..may not have a real application. 1935R. A. Fisher Design of Experiments iii. 38 (heading) Student's t test. 1937Yule & Kendall Introd. Theory Statistics (ed. 11) xxiii. 440 We proceed to give one or two examples of the way in which the ‘Student’ distribution is generally used to test the significance of various results obtained from small samples. 1938Biometrika XXX. 223 As the theory of mathematical statistics has developed, the significance of ‘Student's’ test has been elaborated from many angles and deeper meanings associated with it than its author had ever dreamed of. 1968P. A. P. Moran Introd. Probability Theory vii. 326 Since t is scale-invariant its distribution is independent of σ, and is known as ‘Student's t-distribution with n - 1 degrees of freedom’. 1980Brit.
