strophiole Bot.|ˈstrɒfɪəʊl| [a. mod.L. strophiolum (Gærtner 1788; often incorrectly strophiola), a use of L. strophiolum, dim. of strophium chaplet, ad. Gr. στρόϕιον, f. στροϕ-, στρέϕειν to turn, twist. Cf. F. strophiole.] An excrescence or tubercle surrounding the hilum of certain seeds.
