The name of the inventor Charles Stroh (fl. 1901) used attrib. to designate stringed instruments (chiefly of the violin class) having an aluminium plate and horn attachment in place of a wooden body, formerly used for recording purposes.

Invented in 1901 by Charles Stroh for use in the early recording studios, where primitive microphones could only pick up sound aimed directly at them (which..the trumpet bell could do). There are also Stroh violas, cellos, mandolins, and guitars. |
