striatum Anat.|straɪˈeɪtəm| Pl. striata. [mod.L., neut. of striātus striate a.] a. The corpus striatum, a body of grey matter within each cerebral hemisphere comprising the lentiform nucleus (i.e. the globus pallidus and the putamen) and the caudate nucleus; some writers also include the claustrum. b. (Now the more usual use.) = neostriatum, i.e. the putamen and the caudate nucleus only.
[1803C. Bell Anat. Human Body III. i. iii. 87 The corpora striata are smooth, cineritious convexities... These bodies are called striata, from the intermixture of the medullary matter, which gives the appearance of striæ when they are cut.] 1889J. Leidy Elem. Treat. Human Anat. (ed. 2) xv. 751 The striatum, or corpus striatum, appears in the body of the lateral ventricle as a smooth, convex gray eminence projecting from its outer wall. 1948A. Brodal Neurol. Anat. iv. 73 The putamen and the caudate nucleus together constitute the neostriatum (often collectively called on account of their similarities the striatum). 1971N. G. Sutton Anat. Brain & Spinal Medulla vii. 102 The claustrum is often considered part of the striatum, that is a detached part of the putamen, but it has also been thought to be an included portion of the cortex of the insula. 1978Nature 23 Feb. 767/1 The rats were decapitated and the corpus striatum ipsilateral to the lesion, the contralateral unlesioned striatum and striata from unlesioned animals were assayed. Hence striˈatal a., of or pertaining to the striatum.
