Strasbourg (ˈstræzbɜːg, ‖ ˈʃtraːsburg) Also 7 Stras-, Strawsborough, Strasbrow, 7– Strasburgh, 9– Strasburg. [G. Strassburg, Fr. Strasbourg.] The name of the principal town of Alsace, used attrib. in the names of various articles. Strasbourg embroidery (see quot.). Strasbourg finch (see quot.). Strasbourg goose, a goose fattened in such a way as to enlarge the liver for use in pâté de foie gras (see pâté3 1 a). Strasbourg linen, a kind of linen imported from Strasbourg. Strasbourg match, an aromatic match for fumigating wines. Strasbourg onion (see quot.). Strasbourg pâté, formerly = Strasbourg pie, but now usu. a goose pâté not enclosed in pastry. Strasbourg pie, a pie made of fatted goose liver: see pâté3 1. Strasbourg turpentine, turpentine obtained from the Silver Fir Abies Picea.
